ABOUT:
The battle for equality and representation has been a long going issue, but why is this? Given that for centuries men have dominated society and set rules and guidelines for how society should be. For the longest time women have been and in some cases they still are limited to their rights. I was until the ratification of the nineteenth amendment when women were allowed to vote. Even before women were given the right to vote, Blacks could not vote nor did they have equal protection by law, but when the fifteenth amendment was passed Blacks were given the right to vote. The LGBTQIA+ community is the most recent group of people who have been demanding rights since before the 1960’s, but what really got the attention of the media was until the police raid at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. As you can see these are only some of the minority groups that have been poorly represented in society. However, this publication is more focused on the media aspect of equality and representation. I bring forth again how men have dominated society, in which they have placed a set of rules and regulations; the same goes for the media. Large corporations are in charge of many things in society, one big one being the media. These corporations give different media outlets structure as to what is important, what to talk about, and a certain view on a topic. We can see in the movie industry that things have progressed for women and other minorities in films. The typical position for women in earlier years was a receptionist or an assistant. Now we see more films where women are even becoming main characters. The same goes with people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community. Some may say why does this matter? But the actual question is why does it not bother you? In this paper I am going to discuss the importance of equality, diversity, and representation of minorities in the media through advocacy and research in several blog posts.
